The Thin Executioner
by Darren Shan
The story is about a scrawny boy named Jebel who is from a very close minded and hateful country and was raised to believe that their race is superior to all the others. The Executioner, a.k.a Jebel's dad, is idolized and it is expected that one of his sons are to succeed him. Jebel decides to go on a quest that no one has ever survived from to prove himself worthy enough. Jebel then sets off with his slave on a series of adventures where he explores different cultures and places. It is such a mind opening story that really highlights acceptance and tolerance.

Unbearable Lightness by: Portia de Rossi

In her autobiography, de Rossi discusses her battle with anorexia in a bhearbreaking yet ultimately uplifting way; she shares how she dieted on an off until she eventually weighed only 82 pounds and had to be hospitalized. She reveals how her career in modeling and acting made her hate her body and how society's stigma against homosexuality forcered her deeper and deeper into the closet. Despite how depressing Unbearable Lightness seems, it shows the strength of human spirit and that sad stories can have happy endings.

The Host by: Stephenie Meyer

In this book, an alien race invades Earth by taking over human bodies. The main chararcter Melanie had recently been resisting the aliens up until her capture. However, the alien that was put in her was unable to extinguish Melanie's strong-willed soul, creating a lot of internal conflict (literally). The story focuses on the two separate characters, Melanie and Wanda (the nickname the alien develops), sharing one body and builds when Melanie encounters a large resistance group who isn't sure if they can trust her.
